Hodgy Beats & Domo Genesis - TANG GOLF

Here’s the latest track out of the Odd Future camp. Wolf Gang’s fastest growing talent, Hodgy Beats, and their resident stoner, Domo Genesis, rapping over the RZA’s beat made originally for the track 4th Chamber from GZA’s classic album, Liquid Swords. These kids just keep getting better and better.

WU LYF - L Y F

I’ve never really been too sure of how I feel about WU LYF but I really like this track. This is the first song off of their debut album, Go Tell Fire To The Mountain, which is due out on June 13th. Sounds like it might just be worth the hype after all. Also, you’ve got to love the Ol’ Dirty Bastard sample at the end.

The Weeknd - House of Balloons Mixtape

The Weeknd AKA Abel Tesfaye has been getting an insane amount of love since, well, this morning when Pitchfork gave his new mixtape BNM. It still manages to amaze me just how much the Best New Music tag can sway an artist’s popularity. Anyway, this new The Weeknd Mixtape, House of Balloons, is great. He makes some pretty dark R’n’B with beats largely influenced by Dubstep/Witch House (I apologise for using both of those terms). The production quality is pretty amazing for a free mixtape as well. Here’s the track House of Balloons/Glass Table Girl and if you like it then there’s a link to the mixtape down below.

Weird Era - Go To Hell EP

Hey guys, sorry for not posting in ages (as if any of you care) but I’ve been busy as owt with uni work. Anyway, here’s a cool EP from a new band from Manchester called Weird Era (I don’t know if they’re named after the Deerhunter album but I’d like to think so). They’re two guys playing what they describe as “noisy dream pop” which seems like a pretty good description to me. The lo-fi noise and general darkness of this EP create a brilliant atmosphere. You can listen to and buy it if you like it (it’s pay what you want) below.

White Lung - Sleep Creep

Recently discovered this massively overlooked band from last year. White Lung is a four piece from Vancouver who released their debut album, It’s The Evil, last year after a string of seven inches. They play ferocious, breakneck post-punk/riot grrrl influenced garage rock/punk. It’s short, fast and doesn’t let down throughout, just how punk should be.

Black Mass - To The Cross

Leeds’ Black Mass have put their debut EP Black Mass, which they released last year, up for free download. Black Mass play Crust/Death Metal influenced Hardcore which is as dark as it is heavy and it’s awesome. They’re signed to Holy Roar as well which should be as big a seal of approval you need to get this. Holy Roar themselves describe this as “4 tracks of Entombed-meets-The Power and the Glory. Think Trap Them, Cursed, Napalm Death - all things crusty, filthy, grindy,” which is as good a description as any. Here’s the EP’s opener, To The Cross, and you can get the EP, if you like the sound of it, down below.

You can download Black Mass here.

Tyler, The Creator vs. Neutral Milk Hotel - Communist Future

Another day another Odd Future post. What did you think of the image? Thought it was about time I showed off my mad art skills. Anyway, here’s one of the weirder mashups I’ve heard lately. It’s a mashup of Tyler, The Creator’s Yonkers and Neutral Milk Hotel’s Communist Daughter from their classic In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. It’s done by Cyclops Rock from LA and it’s been posted on his Soundcloud. There’s moments where it doesn’t really work but it’s worth listening to for the time it does.
You can download it here.

Nocando vs. Baths - Lovely Bloodflow (Remix)

Here’s LA rapper Nocando rapping over the fantastic Lovely Bloodflow by Bath from last year. It’s to appear on a mixtape of MCs rapping over left-field producers that is being put out by the Hellfyre Club record label. It’s only a short minute long sample but it sounds insanely promising. The mixtape drops next Tuesday.

Weedeater - Homecoming

Out of all the bands to come out of the surge of sludge/stoner metal in recent years, Weedeater have definitely proved themselves to be one of the best. Finally following up their great 2007 album God Luck and Good Speed, Weedeater will be releasing Jason… The Dragon on the 15th on the legendary Southern Lord Records. Here is the first track to be released from the album, Homecoming, courtesy of Stereogum and it’s a beauty. It’ll have a pretty familiar sound to those who are fans already of Weedeater and with Steve Albini behind the desks again I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
Listen to Homecoming over at Stereogum here.

Desolate - Divinus

I’ve been meaning to check out Desolate for a while after hearing quite a bit of buzz around his debut and then I saw this fanmade video over at The Needle Drop. I’m thoroughly impressed by this track, sounds like a more ambient Burial. As The Needle Drop point out, there’s a definite emphasis on atmosphere in this track and it works well. Definitely going to have to check out the album, The Invisible Insurrection. I’ll get back to you on what I think of it.

Four Tet - Pinnacles

On his show last week, Radio 1 DJ, Gilles Peterson premiered a brand new Four Tet track called Pinnacles. The full studio version and not just the shortened radio version has now become available. It’s maybe got more of a beat to it than your usual Four Tet but other than that it’s not dissimilar to his other stuff with it’s shimmering piano and it’s pretty fantastic. It will apparently feature on a split 7” with Dan Snaith of Caribou under the moniker Daphni. Whether this split means that we will see some more new music from Four Tet this year is unknown but I definitely hope so.

Tyler, The Creator - French (Toro y Moi Remix)

Tyler has recently said on Twitter that his favourite album of the year so far is Toro y Moi’s Underneath the Pine so he must be pretty happy to here this remix. French was originally on Tyler’s album Bastard back in 2009 and was one of it’s highlights. The original’s beat was pretty heavy and simplistic but Toro y Moi’s version sees a much smoother beat with a bit more going on. It kind of sees Chaz exploring his chillwave side but it’s much darker, moodier relative. Really hoping for some more Tyler, The Creator remixes from good musicians, namely this one.

Gold Panda - Marriage EP

Gold Panda’s Lucky Shiner was one of the best albums of 2010. It was a beautiful album of crackling, lo-fi electronics that seemed to come out of no where. He released the brilliant Marriage off of Lucky Shiner today as a single/EP. It includes remixes by two other artists who released great electronic albums last year, Forest Swords and Baths. There is also a remix by Star Slinger (probably the best here) who did a fantastic remix of Deerhunter’s Helicopter which can be found here. You can listen to the EP which includes all three of these remixes, a remix by Halls and the original down below.
